Sleep is a complicated beast. As a former shiftworker I've trained my body to get up too early. It seems that whenever I go to bed, I wake at 6am, unable to get back to sleep. Even if I'm still tired.
It's a different "problem" from what you're talking about here but the lesson is the same; everything got better when I decided to work with what I've got, accept the routine and just get up and get on with the day. No use picking a fight that you know you're gonna lose.
